Welcome to PA Reel Sisters

Where reel women gather on the water to fly fish, learn, and find connection

PA Reel Sisters is much more than learning to fly fish. It's about connection, yes - but it's also about our waters, the beauty around us, and the places we're lucky enough to call our own.

We learn from one another, spend time on the water, and take part in conservation work that helps protect what we love.

At the center of it all is something simple: support, kindness, and love. No judgement, no pressure, just women being themselves.

Meet Your Guide

Hi, I’m Renie, founder of PA Reel Sisters.

Some of my favorite memories have been made beside the water. Over the years, I’ve watched complete strangers become friends, and friends become sisters. That’s what inspired me to create PA Reel Sisters, a place where women can come together, share time outdoors, learn from one another, and build lasting connections through a shared love of fly fishing and the beauty around them.

I’ve been fishing most of my life, but when fly fishing found me in 2012, it became part of who I am. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours wandering streams, learning the water, studying insects, listening to birds, and finding peace in the outdoors.

I recently obtained my guiding license to become more official in helping women on the water through PA Reel Sisters. I love teaching beginners, encouraging women to step outside their comfort zones, and creating a welcoming place where nobody feels judged for being new.

Outside of fishing, I’m happiest when I’m connected to nature. You’ll often find me calling in crows deep in the woods, watching and caring for my purple martins, working in my flower and vegetable gardens, searching the forest floor for morel mushrooms, or wandering through a local festival every now and then.

But my favorite thing of all is spending time with my grandchildren, teaching them to slow down, notice the birds, turn over rocks in the creek, plant seeds, fish local streams, and appreciate the beauty God has given us here on this heaven on earth.

For me, PA Reel Sisters is friendship, healing, conservation, laughter, learning, and reconnecting with the natural world in a way that many of us have forgotten.

I’m glad you’re here.

Fly Fishing Basics

Fly Fishing Basics

What is fly fishing?

A woman learning to fly fish

Fly fishing is a method of fishing that uses a lightweight artificial fly to imitate insects, baitfish, or other natural food sources that fish eat. Instead of using the weight of a lure to cast, fly fishing relies on the weight of the fly line to carry the fly across the water. This allows anglers to present the fly gently and naturally on the surface or below the water.

How is fly fishing different than other methods of fishing?

"Flies", the little things we use to lore fish

A basic fly fishing setup includes a fly rod, fly reel, fly line, leader, and artificial flies. There are many types of flies designed to imitate different insects and fish food. Learning how to cast a fly rod takes a little practice, but once the motion becomes comfortable it can be very relaxing and enjoyable.

So why go fly fishing?

One of the most rewarding parts of fly fishing is learning to read the water. Fish often hold in areas where food naturally drifts toward them, such as along current seams, behind rocks, or in deeper pools. With PA Reel Sisters, you'll learn the "how" of fly fishing in the company of amazing women and the direction of a lifelong fly fisher. Once you're ready, PA Reel Sisters offers guided fly fishing events across Central PA and beyond.

Testimonials

Stories From Our Sisters

PA Reel Sisters has brought so many wonderful women into my life who share the same passion for fishing and the outdoors. What started as a fishing group quickly became a circle of friends who support each other both on and off the water. I’m so grateful to be part of something that brings women together in such a genuine way.

Robin

Being part of PA Reel Sisters has been an incredible experience. The friendships, the laughter on the river, and the encouragement from other women make every trip special. It’s a place where everyone feels welcome and where we can all learn and grow together.

Lisa

When I first joined PA Reel Sisters I really wasn’t sure how to do any of it. Fly fishing felt overwhelming in the beginning. But through the retreats, clinics, and fish and hangs, the women in the group were always there to help and encourage me. Over the past year I’ve learned so much from them and gained the confidence to get out on the water. These days my casting is spot on, and I’m so grateful for the friendships and support that helped me get there.

Chrysan

I’m just getting started with fly fishing and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of PA Reel Sisters. Everyone has been so kind and encouraging, and it makes learning something new feel fun instead of intimidating. I’m really looking forward to many fishing adventures ahead.
